Now more than ever, eco-conscious buying and sustainable fashion should be at the forefront of our mind. There is still such a huge stream of people buying online from fast-fashion brands such as ASOS and PLT, but for what reason? Chances are, you’re not going to be going anywhere to be able to benefit from a new going out dress, and you *probably* don’t need another new pair of block heel sandals, do you? Shopping and wearing sustainably and responsibly doesn’t have to be unfashionable when there are SO many options these days. Try charity shops, Depop, even upcycling existing clothes if you’re particularly gifted with a sewing machine. Which is exactly what Nicole, eco-warrior fashion designer and stylist, does.
A few months after our last shoot, Nicole and I teamed up again for another sustainable fashion editorial. To give this shoot a more natural feel than the last, we decided on Richmond Park in London. This gave us beautiful natural and airy tones, to which Nicole matched our wardrobe. The pieces we had were all pre-owned and pre-loved, in whites, blacks and beiges.
Just to throw an extra spanner in the works, after one of my models bailing on me the night before (and me immediately drafting in Amber, one of my best friends as a replacement – luckily she’s my long suffering model), my make-up artist also called in sick just as we got to our location. Luckily, Jasmine, one of my original models, never goes anywhere without her make-up bag. Life saved. Jasmine spent some time doing her’s and Amber’s make-up, while Nicole and I planned out the day’s sustainable outfits. Out in the field, we were ready to go. Between my two models, we had 8 outfits – four pairs of matching outfits. This gave us a range of different styles, from country and romantic to modern and fresh.
By showing how wearable slow, sustainable fashion is, we had our shoot published in Picton magazine. This was a huge achievement for us, especially since we didn’t have a MUA and Amber isn’t ~technically~ a model. It just goes to show that if you’re a good enough team, the problems don’t matter.
If you have a concept for a photoshoot in mind, and you’re looking for an alternative photographer behind the camera, have a look at some of my previous work and get in touch!
