Golden Hour Photoshoot

Sometimes the best ideas are the ones you have the day before it’s time to do it. And that’s what happened with mine and Amber’s completely impromptu golden hour photoshoot last summer. Golden hour is widely known as being the best lighting for portraits and photos as the light is super flattering. It’s the hour before sunset, where the shadows get long and the light gets warm and gentle, giving you a beautiful glow.

Out on my evening stroll one summer evening, I stumbled across a gorgeous field filled with wildflowers. The tall grass had yellow and purple petals dotted throughout, and I just knew that I needed to shoot here. I text Amber to get her involved and planned out one of the outfits, while Ambs planned the other. Her outfit was floaty, romantic and feminine. Mine was bolder, while still with a touch of boho. So we waited for the sunset to begin the next day and headed out.

The problem with golden hour photoshoots is that it’s a race against time. You only have around an hour and the sun is one the move. So we started with our back to the sun and in Amber’s white floral dress. This woman turned up with no make-up on and still looks ridiculously good. It’s just not fair. We sat in the flowers as the beautiful golden hour light created a halo effect through Ambs’ blonde hair. This gave us sweet, romantic feel to our images.

As we chased the sunlight, we switched to outfit two in the long grass. A burnt orange tie up dress, with a big sun hat and big orange sunglasses. The attitude CHANGED. Stood facing the sun, we let the sass flow through us. Powerful, sexy, confident. The images were near enough perfect straight out of camera, how does she DO that?
